A Brief Story

The Statistical Sciences Department of the University of Udine (DISS) was established on the 1st of January 1995 through the joint effort of professors and researchers coming from the Faculties of Economics, Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, Agriculture, and Education but all working in the fields of statistics, econometrics and demographics.
The proposal originated from the necessity to organize, coordinate and promote the activities of applied and theoretical research in the various sciences that are involved with data collection and analysis, at all of the various stages of construction, elaboration, analysis and generalization.
The founding group was made up by the following professors: Nidia Batic, Marco Breschi, Fabio Buratto, Alessandra Giovagnoli, Giovanna Gonano, Renato Guseo, Marji Lines, Luigi Pace, Laura Pagani, Franca Soldano and Marzio Strassoldo. After one year of activity the DISS moved to the current address in Via Treppo 18, in a building adjacent to the Faculty of Economics and very close to the city centre.

Department Structure

The Department is a good environment both for teaching and research activities. The Department Computer Lab is used by both students and teachers, for writing theses, teaching or working in small groups, completing specific research projects, and so on. The Department has organized and now manages an Advanced Computer Lab is equipped for telephone surveys. The Department also has a seminar room for seminars as well as research and work meetings that periodically involve members and external scholars.
